Just found out that my local grocery store is finally carrying one of my favorite Spring flowers…
The Peony!
Peonies are not only absolutely gorgeous in grandeur but they have lush full blooms with enough petals to look as if they could unfold layer by layer… forever. Peonies dress every room in glory and splendor and I absolutely love having them grace my home. I grabbed my first bunch yesterday after a friend let me know they were finally in our local Safeway store. Immediately upon entering my home their gorgeous fragrance filled the air and I was instantly happy. I adore these flowers and wanted to learn a bit more so I have copied a few websites and facts about Peonies that I was unaware of until now…
Peonies are one of the most loved flowers by the brides for their endless layers of petals and subtle fragrance. The flower itself speaks romance, elegance and abundance. Peonies certainly create stunning and breath-taking wedding scenes. However, there are more interesting facts about this beautiful flower…
– A peony represents wealth and honor. It also embody romance and love, and are regarded as the omen of good fortune and happy marriage.
– They are the 12th wedding anniversary flower.
– A peony is one plant you will enjoy for a long time. Peony plants can live to be 100 years and still produce flowers.
– Peonies bloom from late April through June in Vancouver.
– Peonies are native to Asia, Southern Europe and Western North America.
– The peony is named after Paeon (also spelled Paean), a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. Asclepius became jealous of his pupil; Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower.
– The white peony is one of the oldest remedies in traditional Chinese medicine. Peonyroot is the part valued in Chinese medicine to treat conditions such as convulsion
– The Chinese name for the peony is sho yu and this means “most beautiful”. No wonder why there are so many people fell in love with peonies for centuries if not millennia in myths.

just love peonies, they are one of my favorite flowers, I am unable to grow them in my yard, as we have way too much shade, but enjoy buying them for my vases inside. thank you for the beautiful post.

Hello. Not sure how I found you but I am so glad I did. I loved your piece on the peonies as they are one of my very favorites. Dahlias as well. So, well, abundant in all ways. However, I was wondering about the care of the flowers from buds on. You mentioned hydrating but didn’t go into any specifics.
