It’s two months into 2019 and I’ve already completed a couple of resolutions. Yay! Last year I wanted to organize my master bedroom closet but never got around to it.. so this year I made it priority #1.
I was surprised to find that it didn’t really take as much time or effort as I thought it would. When it came down to it, I was able to transform my entire closet using 5 different ideas and tools from Walmart. Walmart’s online store has so many great and versatile organizing pieces that can help you obtain your “New Year New You” attitude. Many of the items I chose today I found at Walmart’s online store.. all affordably priced and many with color and size options.
Our closet before
When we first moved into our home a couple of years ago we had installed a closet system to help fill the space properly. We found over time that we needed more help keeping things organized and making our closet more beautiful and welcoming. I’m so excited to share all the different ways in which we made our all white master closet not only more efficient but cozy and full of texture.
1. Switch to Velvet Hangers
Before I organized my closet we had over 300 hangers.. and very few were the same color and style. It made the space look messy and unorganized.
Instead, I opted to switch out all the hangers for neutral velvet hangers. Not only do they hold the clothes better.. but they don’t give your shirts the dreaded ‘sharp corner edge’ like wire hangers often do. Also, velvet hangers are a must for anyone who loves off the shoulder tops or other tricky tops because the velvet fabric keeps the shirt from falling off. One of my biggest pet peeves since I wear off the shoulder tops and strappy tops all the time.
My closet now has a consistent and organized look. Click here to shop my velvet hangers or shop the velvet hangers below.
2. Add texture and warmth with baskets
I had several bins in my closet that were all white and very ordinary in shape. I couldn’t see what was inside of them because they filled each shelf entirely. I opted to change out all the white square bins for baskets that provided a beautiful woven texture and a lower height which allowed me to see inside of each. Now I can find my towels and other items so much faster. The closet looks so much warmer with the baskets. I’m thrilled with the change.

3. Upgrade to a 2-sided Hamper
Our old hamper was one of those inexpensive net pieces that I hated. You could see the dirty clothes which I never liked and I didn’t have a divider for lights/darks or dry cleaning. Drove me crazy!
One of the easiest ways to upgrade your closet is by adding a 2-sided hamper that compliments the colors of your closet. Walmart has several options of hampers in a multitude of colors, shapes and sizes.. I found a beautiful woven oval hamper with removable cloth bags that I love. It’s so convenient removing the bags and taking our dirty clothes downstairs. The two sided hamper makes starting a load of laundry quick and easy because the clothes are already sorted between lights and darks.

4. Cozy the Space with a Rug
My closet was drab and boring with no added details or decor. Like many closets, there are no windows and I craved something pretty and feminine in the space.
An inexpensive and easy way to brighten up the space is by adding a faux fur rug! I found this rug at Walmart for only $31. I love the neutral white look but for those who love more color, this rug also comes in 6 color options. If you don’t have hardwood you can still lay rugs on top of your carpet to achieve a similar look.

5. Add extra shelving using a 9 cube organizer
Our closet had an extra hanging space that wasn’t being utilized properly and as a result I filled it with pillows, extra comforters, etc. All thrown in on the floor of the closet. It was driving me crazy because it not only looked messy but the space wasn’t being used efficiently. By introducing a 9 cube organizer we were able to add extra shelving for my nicer shoes, purses, etc. It’s so much more convenient having the separate spaces.

Jeff and I were so excited with the master closet cubicle addition that we decided to add a smaller piece to our tiny downstairs coat closet. This space was so small and cluttered we really needed an excuse to organize it. With this cubicle, Jeff now has a spot for his computer bag and I have a couple more for my things. So happy!

They really do! So many great items for organizing. I love my new baskets! :)
I have the velvet hangers too and I just got your hamper. So excited. I wanted to tell you a great tip to hang my pants. I hang them on plain white KIDS sized hangers so they don’t slide around. I found the velvet ones were taking a little longer to get the pant dituayind in the hanger.
That is a great tip Vanessa. Thank you! -Kristy
This is beautiful! Definitely great ideas and I’ve been eyeing the same hamper for a while.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this post Nadege! It’s the cutest hamper :)

Who installed your closet system? The design looks great!
Thanks Teri! Jeff and I did. :) The PAX system is from IKEA.
Is your closet exposed or do you have doors on it?
YES to velvet hangers! I purchased velvet hangers 3 years ago and haven’t looked back! I even purchased a velvet scarf hanger that was available in the brand i bought.
Thanks Kristy for the tips on the closest cubes. I’ve been looking for storage items for my shoes.
Love this! So inspirational!
Such a wonder project Beautifully completed. But where is the actual white closet shelving from?
Hey Erin – the closet shelving is actually the Pax system from Ikea. xx
So elegant, organized, & inspirational. I just love everything!!!
Hi Kristy,
I saw you mention the wall mounted jewelry armoire you added to your master closet recently. I remember you had a few arrive broken and was wondering what you ended up purchasing and where it came from.
I’ve been researching these and would appreciate your input.
Thank you!
Barbara
Hi- did you ever find out where she got her jewelry closet from? I was wondering the same thing!
Hi Stephanie, I ordered that from Amazon. Here is a link. :)

Thank you for sharing your beautiful closets and great ideas with affordable items. Where/what are the original organizers that you put in a few years ago?
It looks fabulous. I love organizing. I used closet world to do some of my large master closet, but your cabinets are so much prettier. Just went to order the 4 cubicle item you recommended, but out of stock.
I had done all velvet hangers, the rug, and the baskets already and it does make a huge difference. I also added a large storage/sitting ottoman in the center of the closet, and thin plastic shoulder covers to each clothes item. The closet looks so uniform, neat and symmetrical. Oh, one other thing that made a difference in look and function are the separators for each group of clothing…it made organizing much easier.
