This last week I’ve been talking here and there about getting back into reading again. I used to read 1-3 books per week and with my last job as a flight attendant I had tons of down time for reading. I think it’s so important to keep your mind stimulated and to do something other than being on the phone, watching T.V., etc. Especially with blogging & IG being my full-time job now.. I need something different in my life! This is why we’ve decided to create a Summer Reading List that we’re sharing with all of you.
Last year I started a book club – and while I enjoyed it.. I put pressure on myself to make it something more.. As a result I found myself not wanting to do it. This was totally my doing. This time around I’ve decided to make an informal fun reading list that I can share with all of you.. full of info on favorite books we’re reading, reviews of books we’ve read, and books we’ve added to our summer reading list.
What We’re Currently Reading
Kristy: I’m a reading a book right now that a friend gave to me – Ladies’ Night by Mary Kay Andrews. It’s about a blogger who found out that her husband is cheating on her… total beach read and perfect book to kick off my summer reading! Click here to shop the book.
Emma: I’m reading a book called Beautiful Lies by Lisa Unger. It’s about a New York Writer who’s life is turned upside down once she discovers that her childhood was not what she thought it was. I don’t want to spoil it too much for you but it’s SO good! Click here to shop the book.
Below we’re sharing our summer reading list full of books that we’re looking forward to reading..
Kristy’s Summer Reading List
Genres I like: Thriller, Political Fiction, Romance, Fiction, Mystery, Biographies
- My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing. Genre: Thriller. Looks like a suspenseful page-turner. Really excited about this one! More about the book: “Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams, and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored. We look like a normal couple. We’re your neighbors, the parents of your kid’s friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with. We all have our secrets to keeping a marriage alive. Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.” Click here to shop the book.
- Waiting for Tom Hanks by Kerry Winfreey. Genre: Romance. I love anything that has to do with a man portrayed as Tom Hanks’ character in the . movie, Sleepless in Seattle. Definitely reading this one. More about the book: “Annie Cassidy dreams of being the next Nora Ephron. She spends her days writing screenplays, rewatching Sleepless in Seattle, and waiting for her movie-perfect meet-cute. If she could just find her own Tom Hanks—a man who’s sweet, sensitive, and possibly owns a houseboat—her problems would disappear and her life would be perfect. But Tom Hanks is nowhere in sight. When a movie starts filming in her neighborhood and Annie gets a job on set, it seems like a sign. Then Annie meets the lead actor, Drew Danforth, a cocky prankster who couldn’t be less like Tom Hanks if he tried. Their meet-cute is more of a meet-fail, but soon Annie finds herself sharing some classic rom-com moments with Drew. Her Tom Hanks can’t be an actor who’s leaving town in a matter of days…can he?” Click here to shop the book.
- The Gifted School by Bruce Holsinger. Genre: Fiction. I’m fascinated by the college admission scandal and this fiction book sounds interesting. More on the book: “Set in the fictional town of Crystal, Colorado, The Gifted School is a keenly entertaining novel that observes the drama within a community of friends and parents as good intentions and high ambitions collide in a pile-up with long-held secrets and lies. Seen through the lens of four families who’ve been a part of one another’s lives since their kids were born over a decade ago, the story reveals not only the lengths that some adults are willing to go to get ahead, but the effect on the group’s children, sibling relationships, marriages, and careers, as simmering resentments come to a boil and long-buried, explosive secrets surface and detonate. It’s a humorous, keenly observed, timely take on ambitious parents, willful kids, and the pursuit of prestige, no matter the cost.” Click here to shop the book.
- Summer of ’69 by Elin Hilderbrand. Genre: Historical Fiction. Dying to read this east-coast based summer read! More about the book: “Welcome to the most tumultuous summer of the twentieth century. It’s 1969, and for the Levin family, the times they are a-changing. Every year the children have looked forward to spending the summer at their grandmother’s historic home in downtown Nantucket. But like so much else in America, nothing is the same: Blair, the oldest sister, is marooned in Boston, pregnant with twins and unable to travel. Middle sister Kirby, caught up in the thrilling vortex of civil rights protests and determined to be independent, takes a summer job on Martha’s Vineyard. Only-son Tiger is an infantry soldier, recently deployed to Vietnam. Thirteen-year-old Jessie suddenly feels like an only child, marooned in the house with her out-of-touch grandmother and her worried mother, each of them hiding a troubling secret. As the summer heats up, Ted Kennedy sinks a car in Chappaquiddick, man flies to the moon, and Jessie and her family experience their own dramatic upheavals along with the rest of the country.” Click here to shop the book.
- Park Avenue Summer by Renée Rosen. Genre: Historical Fiction. I love reading about girl bosses living out their dreams. More on the book: “It’s 1965 and Cosmopolitan magazine’s brazen new editor in chief—Helen Gurley Brown—shocks America and saves a dying publication by daring to talk to women about all things off-limits…New York City is filled with opportunities for single girls like Alice Weiss, who leaves her small Midwestern town to chase her big-city dreams and unexpectedly lands a job working for the first female editor in chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, Helen Gurley Brown.” Click here to shop the book.
More books that I want to read:
Emma’s Summer Reading List
Genres I like: True Crime, Romance, Thriller, Murder-Mystery, Non Fiction, Historical Fiction
- Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered by Karen Kilgariff & Georgia Hardstark. Genre: Nonfiction. I listen to their podcast “My Favorite Murder” weekly & love these girls. Can’t wait to read their new book. Click here to shop this book.
- Becoming by Michelle Obama. Genre: Nonfiction. I actually own this book and have been meaning to read it for awhile now. Very excited to hear her thoughts on her life and marriage. Click here to shop this book.
- The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. Genre: Fiction. Really excited about this adventurous book.. here’s a little excerpt from the back of the book: “In this unforgettable portrait of human frailty and resilience, Kristin Hannah reveals the indomitable character of the modern American pioneer and the spirit of a vanishing Alaska―a place of incomparable beauty and danger. The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss, the fight for survival, and the wildness that lives in both man and nature.” NYT Best Seller. Click here to shop this book.
- The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston & Mario Spezi. Genre: True Crime. Really interested to read this.. I love true crime books! More about the book: “In 2000, Douglas Preston fulfilled a dream to move his family to Italy. Then he discovered that the olive grove in front of their 14th century farmhouse had been the scene of the most infamous double-murders in Italian history, committed by a serial killer known as the Monster of Florence. Preston, intrigued, meets Italian investigative journalist Mario Spezi to learn more. Then in a bizarre twist of fate, Preston & Spezi become targets of the police investigation.” SO INTERESTING! Click here to shop this book.
- The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry. Genre: Thriller. Kinda scary-seeming. I have it on my list but it’s a little creepy. Here’s information from the back of the book: “Christopher and Hannah are a happily married surgeon and nurse with picture-perfect lives. All that’s missing is a child. When Janie, an abandoned six-year-old, turns up at their hospital, Christopher forms an instant connection with her, and he convinces Hannah they should take her home as their own. But Janie is no ordinary child, and her damaged psyche proves to be more than her new parents were expecting. Janie is fiercely devoted to Christopher, but she acts out in increasingly disturbing ways, directing all her rage at Hannah. Unable to bond with Janie, Hannah is drowning under the pressure, and Christopher refuses to see Janie’s true nature. Hannah knows that Janie is manipulating Christopher and isolating him from her, despite Hannah’s attempts to bring them all together. But as Janie’s behavior threatens to tear Christopher and Hannah apart, the truth behind Janie’s past may be enough to push them all over the edge.” Creepy right?! Click here to shop the book.

Every CHRISTMAS we get a book in our stockings and this year AFter heavy hinTing i got becoming by Michelle Obama. Its a very interesting GLIMPSE inTo a life usually only seen through the political window.
The next book i cant wait to read is 12 years a slave by Solomon noRthup. Like most peoplE, ive seen the film, however i feel that hollywood twists a lot of the stories we watch, and what better way to learn than from the man who really wEnt through it all. Bonjour kristy & emma!
HapPily posting that it’s a crazy good idea to start a summer read list. The both of you inspiring ithers to read is fabulous! As an advid reader myself as well as an aspiring writer, i am all “ in” on joining you and your followers in your great summer read!! So super excited! In response to your inquiries:
1. no, i am sad to say that i have noT read any if your book read list but i do like many of the authors and some interesting new authors as well gOt my attention.
2. I would love to read my lovely wife by samanTha downing or little fires everywhere by celeste Ng. Add to this, the outsider because stephen king is a fave and a master storyteller with a touch of chilling mystery. James patterson and his series book 1, inviSible & book 2 unsolved, where the crawdads sing, the monster of florence, the PERFECT child, ladies night, bEautiFul lies & educated. anxious to hear the reviews you
ladies out up and reviews from your followers on their reads.
3. A few books i feel would be interesting to add tO your summer book list include: Stillhouse lake by rachael caine, the sIlent patient by alex michaelides, etched in sand: a true stiry about siblings wHo survived childhood on long Island by reginA calcaterra. Plus, any classic you can take time to read is a bonus, pUre
art! Thank you ladies for doing this, i have found titles i would not normally find on here and its pretty awesome. Love your blogging and personalities kristy and emma!
Sorry for typos i have no idea what happened lol!
Hi Kristy, a jumbled mess with typos and other MISTYPED wording. Ugh! Anyways excuse that, i may haVe my ipad set up improperly and sYnched in this typesetting arrangement Because i use GRAMMARLY and its a mess in certain sites. So Sorry!
Have read where the crawdaDs sing and loved it
Its a great book
Have you read “The German Girl” by Armando Lucas Correa, “The Rent Collector” by Camron Wright or “Before we were yours” by lisa wingate? Thanks for the recommendations! Added several to my long list of books to read!
I just discovered Jenny Colgan — her books are wonderful!! The Bookshop on the Shore is like A modern Jane Eyre. I read it in two days. Also, the Last Mrs. Parrish is a good psychological thriller.
I love the idea of a reading list instead of the book club. The book club does put a lot of pressure on finishing the books quickly and sometimes I have more time than others to read. I just started the great alone last night! So far so good. I also am really interested in when the crawdads sing. I was going to purchase it but had the Great alone already. I think a great idea would be touching back on them after summer to have a discussion on the ones you did read.
Thanks for the great suggestions.
BB
Yay! Thanks for sharing Brandy..That’s a great idea! :) Hugs!
