We love to read and have been wanting to write a blog post about books we love for quite awhile now… With Autumn in full swing what better time? We both love the adventure that reading provides and find it a wonderful escape during the cooler Autumn and Winter months. Reading is such a nice distraction, especially with all the tech toys out there… We look forward to taking a break.

An oldie but goodie of Emma reading to me…

Today we’ve listed a few favorite books below.. Some that we’ve read and reviewed and others that we are dying to get our hands on.  Let us know what you think!

Books we have read ~

Thrillers

1.  The Woman in Cabin 10′ by Ruth Ware

Emma ~

I read, ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ in one day. If that doesn’t show you how much I loved it… I don’t know what will. I’m a bit biased because I love Ruth Ware’s writing style. I read her first book, ‘In a Dark, Dark World in one day as a matter of fact.
I love thrillers and this had sitting on the edge of your seat written all over it.  It’s a story about a news reporter who finds herself in the middle of a gripping murder mystery.  With lots of character details and twists and turns I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. That took one day.
This book is thrilling, exciting, and full of mystery. It kept me guessing all the way through until the end. My favorite kind of read!

2. Big Little Lies’ by Liane Moriarty

Kristy ~

I’m sure many of you are already aware of  the book, ‘Big Little Lies’ from HBO’s special with the same name starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley.  I hadn’t read the book when the show originally ran but once it was over, I knew I had to read it. The show kept me on the edge of my seat the entire way through…
The story, based around 3 women’s lives, Madeline, Celeste, and Jane, is set in a well to do area of Monterey, CA. (So close to me!) Although all three women are vastly different, they are connected through their young children who attend the same school together as well as through each of their struggles with marriage and the men in their lives.
Having raised a daughter myself and made many new friends through the process..  I felt a common bond with the women in this book. I’ve come to learn that we don’t always know what each family or marriage is truly like nor what is going on behind closed doors.  People are good at hiding things.
Big Little Lies is fascinating with it’s take on husbands, exes, school drama, and more. I loved watching the show and reading the book was just the icing on the cake.

Non-Fiction

1. Breaking Night’ by Liz Murray

Emma ~

This summer I went away to Europe on a month long trip and with a ton of travel planned I knew I had to bring a couple of great books to help me pass the time.  ‘Breaking Night’  is a story about a girl who is close to my own age and who grew up in the Bronx with parents who were drug addicts. To help get herself away from this kind of life, Liz worked harder than she ever thought possible and eventually made it into Harvard.  I related so much to this story.  Liz, through perseverance and diligence accomplished all of her goals.  I’m always looking for positive, uplifting stories and this is one I would recommend to all.

Books We Are Excited To Read:

1.‘A Stranger in the House’ by Shari Lapena

The thriller, A Stranger in the House was released just a month ago to great fan fare and we are really looking forward to reading it as it looks to be a page turner.  The story follows a sweet couple who were  recently married and have no children. The husband, Tom, comes home to find his wife has vanished while he was out. Her purse was left behind. He calls the cops only to find that she’s been in a car accident.  One that she can’t remember.  This thriller has suspense and lots of potential suspects leaving the reader gripped.
Dying to read this one!!

2. “Origin” by Dan Brown

If you have read, “The Da Vinci Code” or any other books that follow Dr. Robert Langdon’s tales, then you’ll want to read ‘Origin’ by Dan Brown coming out next month. More hidden mystery and religion come head to head in another ‘whodunit’ starring the controversial fictional character.
I’ve read all of Dan Brown’s faced paced novels and love the interesting historical references that are often intertwined.  The debates his books have brought about are fascinating!

3. “What We Lose” by Zinzi Clemmons

‘What We Lose’ is an incredible story based loosely on author, Zinzi Clemmons’ very own life. Author Zinzi is a young African-American woman who has just moved back home to Philidelphia after college to help care for her ailing mother.  Through discussions with her mother about her life, her own skin differences and attitudes about race (her mother was a light skinned coloured South African woman, her dad, an African American) as well as her struggles of growing up in a primarily white wealthy neighborhood.. Zinzi writes the tale of how she coped with all using Thandi, her protagonist to tell the story.

This book grapples with so many diverse topics such as mother/daughter relationships, growing up in rural Pennsylvania as a light skinned African American woman, and trying to decipher within her own race, where she fit in with parents who had different skin tones and backgrounds. Zinzi, like Thandi always felt caught in the middle and struggled internally her entire life as a result.
‘What we lose’ is the powerful story of life through love, grief, and understanding.
We are so happy that Zinzi opened her heart and life in this compelling novel..
Being a mother and daughter, with a close relationship… we can’t wait to read it!
